Assessments

As in the medical field, counseling begins with an accurate assessment. Dr. Sherry Baker can’t treat what she doesn’t see and if she can’t see it accurately, she can’t treat it accurately. She uses tests/assessments to collect the important information to:

Identify and understand the client’s complaints and problem issues.
Collect data to understand the client’s world and way of seeing things.
Identify client strengths and weaknesses.
Begin case formulation that leads to treatment planning.

The clinical interview is the most common assessment tool used in counseling as it is a “conversation with a purpose.” Standardized tests are considered to be the finest of assessment tools because they have been refined to the point where they can measure behavior, aptitude, ability, or personality with a high degree of objectivity and consistency.
